Five NPA rebels, one army officer killed in Cadiz clash
MANILA,March 7 -- Five communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels and amilitary officer died during a clash between the two sides in theoutskirts of Cadiz City, Negros Occidental on Sunday.
Citing report reaching the Philippine Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio,Army spokesman Lt. Col. Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos said the firefight alsoresulted in the recovery of three high-powered firearms of the rebels.
Burgossaid troops from the 62nd Infantry Battalion were on a patrol at thevicinity of Sitio Aluyan, Barangay Caduhaan, Cadiz City at around 10a.m. when they caught up with an undetermined number of rebels.
“They(the soldiers) were conducting security patrol when the fighting brokeout,” Burgos said, adding that the name of the slain Army lieutenantwas withheld pending notification of his family.
Burgossaid the troops recovered at the scene of the encounter the five bodiesof the still unidentified rebels. Also recovered were an M14, an M16and an M653 rifles.
