Seven Abu Sayyaf bandits killed in Sulu raid
MANILA, March 7 - Seven Abu Sayyaf bandits, including two women, were killed during a raid of their lair by Marine soldiers in Siasi town in Sulu at dawn Sunday, a military authorities said.
Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo said troops from the 6th Marine Battalion Landing Team assaulted Laminusa island at about 3:47 a.m. Sunday following reports that a number of Abu Sayyaf bandits were holed up in the area.
Quoting reports from the field, Arevalo said the amphibious raid was supported by Navy gunboats. He said the raid was conducted using the Fleet-Marine concept type of operations.
He said the bandits, believed to have ties with the Jemaah Islamiyah, were led by one Abu Benhur, alias Boy Tondo.
“The people of Sulu could be another step closer to their longing for a lasting peace in the area after another successful conduct of a Fleet-Marine Operation at Laminusa Island, Siasi, Sulu,” said Arevalo.
The operation also resulted in the seizure of 15 assorted high-powered firearms and four rifle grenades.
He said the clash also led into the wounding of a Marine soldier who was taken to a command ship, PS 31, for treatment.
“As of this report, clearing the encounter site is ongoing in the presence of barangay officials for proper turnover to local officials,” said Arevalo.
“This development is still in the pursuit of Navy's quest for lasting peace in Mindanao for sustainable progress to come in. This is another testament to the potency of Fleet-Marine Operations of extending seapower to the shore through our Marines backed by ships from the Phil Fleet both of the Navy,” he said.
“We have to sustain our conduct of mil operations along with humanitarian development projects to neutralize the present crop of bandit and terrorist groups from recovering from their earlier setbacks with the first and defeat its roots with the second,” added Arevalo.
About three weeks ago, Marine soldiers killed Abu Sayyaf leader Albader Parad and five of his men during an assault of their lair in Maimbung town. Parad led a number of high-profile kidnappings in Sulu.(
