ILOILO CITY, March 12 (PNA) – The municipality of Zarraga has been declared under a state of calamity by virtue of a resolution approved by its Sangguniang Bayan this week, thus enabling the town to use portion of its calamity fund to assist sectors affected by the El Niño phenomenon.
The SB in favoring the request of Zarraga Mayor Gregorio S. Brazas cited the report of Jeanne P. Concepcion, the municipal deputized civil defense coordinator where she quoted that “the damage can qualify for the criteria for the declaration of the entire municipality under a state of calamity.”
A copy of the report furnished by the Office of SB member Erwin Guadalupe showed that some 917 farmers have been affected by the phenomenon with total losses amounting to around P49 million.
The damage on the town’s fishery sector was also pegged at about P424,487 with some seven hectares of fishponds that culture tilapia and hito as affected.
Simultaneous with the declaration the municipality also laid down its various measures to help the affected mitigate more possible impacts.
These include the extension of financial assistance or conduct of immediate relief operations to affected farmers and fisher folks by purchasing rice in preparation for their future consumption; installation of shallow tube wells, agreement with refilling stations for an assurance of drinking water; purchase of vegetable seeds and vaccines for affected livestock.
